Youth from the Greater Bay Area Gather to Discuss the Future of AI and Education
Presenting the ‘Youth Prospect on the use of AI in Education in Hong Kong' and
Preparing for the International Model UNESCO Conference

Sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) and organised by the UNESCO Hong Kong Association (UHKA) and the Hong Kong Institute of Sustainable Development Education, the “2024 Secondary School Model UNESCO (MUNESCO) International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Education—Hong Kong Greater Bay Area Conference was held on July 6–7, 2024, in Hong Kong. The conference attracted 43 secondary schools across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. After the preliminary selection, 168 students played the role of representatives of 56 different countries’ delegations to discuss how artificial intelligence can be applied to have a positive impact on the future of education. Through debate and negotiation, students’ insights were collected and will be published in the “Youth Prospect on the Use of AI in Education in Hong Kong” to promote the realisation of Sustainable Development Goal 4—Quality Education.

Professor Karen Cheung, President of the UNESCO Hong Kong Association, delivered the welcoming remarks for the conference. Prof. Karen Cheung emphasised in her speech that this conference echoes the message in UNESCO’s report “Reimagining Our Futures Together: A New Social Contract for Education,” published in 2021, and the rising international attention on artificial intelligence and its application in education. The conference empowers youth to unleash their potential, broadens their international horizons through experiential learning, and facilitates cultural exchange, respect, and inclusion among students from Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, cultivating future talents with national pride and a global perspective.

The conference is supported by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government of the People’s Republic of China, College of Professional and Continuing Education of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong, the Education University of Hong Kong, the Education University of Hong Kong Alumni Association, the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, Sustainable Development Solutions Network (Hong Kong), The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council, co-organized by the Sprinkles (HK) Charity Foundation Limited. Consulate Generals in Hong Kong, including Colombia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland, and the United Kingdom, also supported the conference and offered messages of congratulations. 

Award-winning students of this regional conference will participate in the international conference to be held on July 20. They will engage in in-depth discussion with students from Poland, Indonesia, Nepal, and other countries on the topic of artificial intelligence and education, showcasing the passion and talents of youth and proposing more innovative solutions for sustainable development. The UHKA is committed to providing students with more international exchange opportunities. The winning delegate of the conference has been successfully selected for the third Model UNESCO International Conference hosted by the World Federation of UNESCO under the recommendation of the UHKA. The delegate will travel to Kazakhstan in August to continue the discussion on artificial intelligence and education with youth representatives from 58 countries and regions.

What is Model UNESCO?

Model UNESCO is an educational event in which participants play the role of representatives of UNESCO Member States, simulating meetings that take place within the organization.

Students participating in this simulation are introduced to the work and purposes of UNESCO. They gain insight into international issues and how international politics works. The aim is to seek through negotiation, discussion, and debate solutions to various world problems, such as human rights, economic development, environmental protection, and disarmament, as well as more important issues such as war and peace.

Winning the Best Delegation at the First International Model of UNESCO

The world’s first International Model of UNESCO was held online from April 29 to 30, 2022. The delegation of Hong Kong SAR – Americana Chen and Reese Wong who are both UNESCO Hong Kong Association Green Citizen Youth Ambassadors received three awards including the Best Delegation, showcasing Hong Kong’s solutions for promoting inclusive, equitable and quality education through Education for Sustainable Development on international platforms.

The 1st Hong Kong Secondary School
Model UNESCO Conference 2022​ – “Transforming Education for Our Common Future”

In November 2022, we held the first Hong Kong Secondary School Model UNESCO Conference, with the motion “Transforming Education for our Common Future”. Nearly 100 students were given opportunities to participate. The conference was supported and guided by the Chinese National Committee for UNESCO. The consulate generals of Australia, Mexico, Russia, and Spain in Hong Kong also offered their support, making the conference highly valued.

2023 HK Secondary School Model UNESCO Conference 
“Climate Sustainability”

In April 2023, sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong), 156 secondary school students from 27 secondary schools in Hong Kong participated in the “BOCHK | UNESCO HK 2023 Hong Kong Secondary School Model UNESCO Conference on Climate Sustainability”, . Student delegates representing different countries explored innovative solutions to climate change through negotiation.


A field trip to the HK Observatory was organised for all awardees and the winner of the best speaker received full funding to participate in the second International Model UNESCO Conference in Kazakhstan. The solution for reducing plastic pollutions in Hong Kong proposed by participating students were summarised and submitted to the Environment and Ecology Bureau of Hong Kong.

Winning the Best Delegation at the Second International Model of UNESCO
“World Heritage”

On July 22, 2023, the “Second International Model UNESCO Conference” was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and the delegation from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China won the “Best Delegation” award for two consecutive years.

The youths representing the delegation of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China are Americana Chen, the youth affairs coordinator of the UNESCO Hong Kong Association, and Sky Lee, the winner of the best speaker award in the “2023 Hong Kong Secondary School Model UNESCO Conference on Climate Sustainability”.

2023 HK-GBA Secondary School
Model UNESCO Conference
“World Heritage”

On November 25, 2023, the UNESCO Hong Kong Association and the Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development held the “2023 Hong Kong – Greater Bay Area (GBA) Secondary School Model UNESCO Conference on World Heritage”. 162 secondary school students from 30 schools in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area passed the preliminary and participated in the conference. Student delegations represented 54 different countries, each proposed innovative solutions to protect World Heritage, and formed consensus to establish” Youth Declaration on Protecting World Heritage”(the Declaration) through insightful discussion and negotiation.

The awardees of the conference were fully funded to participate in a one-day “World Heritage” theme field trip to Macau to enhance their understanding of how innovative solutions for cultural heritage conservation are implemented.
