From Global Insights to Regional Solutions

Youth Present the “Youth Prospect on the Development of Smart and Sustainable Development of Cities in the Greater Bay Area” in the Regional Conference of the 2025 Secondary School Model Unesco International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Cities

Sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) and organized by the UNESCO Hong Kong Association (UHKA) and the Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development (HiESD), the 2025 Secondary School Model UNESCO (MUNESCO) International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Cities—Hong Kong Greater Bay Area Conference successfully concluded on July 6, 2025.  112 students excelled from nearly 800 students participating in the preliminary selection and represented 56 countries to negotiate and propose solutions for smart and sustainable urban development.

In her remark, Professor Karen Cheung, President of the UNESCO Hong Kong Association, highlighted that the theme of the conference builds upon a variety of UNESCO Initiatives related to the theme of cities, including the Creative Cities Network and the Global Network of Learning Cities, and the Media and Information Literacy Cities. The conference strengthens the bond and inclusion between students in the Greater Bay Area, empowering youths to transform knowledge into innovative recommendations and drive tangible changes towards sustainable development collaboratively.

Building on last year’s success—where student recommendations on AI in education were incorporated into the Chief Executive’s 2024 Policy Address—this year’s conference focused on technology-driven urban innovation, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). The outcome of the discussion will be released by youths of the Greater Bay Area as the “Youth Prospect on the Development of Smart and Sustainable Development of Cities in the Greater Bay Area”, encouraging students to “Think Globally, Act Locally”.

The conference is supported by the World Federation of Clubs and Associations for UNESCO, the Education Bureau, the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau, the Development Bureau, the Housing Bureau, and the Council for Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Development of the HKSAR Government, as well as SDSN Hong Kong, leading universities in Hong Kong, and the Consulates General of Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland in Hong Kong.

With the vision to empower and unite young people from all over the world, allowing them to represent different countries, engage in insightful dialogue, and foster international exchange of innovative ideas, the award-winning delegates will advance to the International Model UNESCO Conference, joining peers from Poland, Indonesia, Nepal, India and beyond to further refine their proposals for Sustainable Urban Transformation.
