Hong Kong Association for UNESCO Honoured to Receive Response from Secretary for Housing on the “Youth Prospect for Smart and Sustainable Cities”
The Hong Kong Association for UNESCO (UHKA) is honoured to have received a formal response letter from Mr. Victor TAI Sheung-shing, Under Secretary for Housing of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, regarding the youth-led resolution “Youth Prospect on Smart and Sustainable Cities.” This resolution was a key outcome of the “BOC HK | UNESCO HK 2025 Secondary School Model UNESCO International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Cities,” held on 19 July 2025.
In his letter, Mr. Tai expressed appreciation and commended the insightful contributions of young participants on topics related to smart and sustainable urban development. He also shared the Housing Bureau’s innovative approaches to tackling housing challenges while aligning with sustainable and smart city goals.
Of particular note was Mr. Tai’s response to clause 6 in the “Youth Prospect” on integrating cultural preservation, urban revitalisation, and digital technologies. He highlighted how Hong Kong’s public housing redevelopment projects integrate community memory and cultural continuity and outlined the Bureau’s efforts to incorporate technology and smart initiatives, including the use of 3D scanning to digitally preserve and showcase historical and architectural elements of older estates.
The UHKA is greatly encouraged by the Housing Bureau’s thoughtful engagement with the views of our youth. This response not only validates the relevance and quality of their proposals but also reinforces the importance of cross-generational, cross-sector, and cross-regional dialogue in shaping a sustainable future.
The 2025 Model UNESCO conference brought together hundreds of secondary school students from around the world to draft and adopt resolutions on smart and sustainable urban development, fostering global citizenship and youth leadership in line with UNESCO’s values. The UHKA looks forward to continuing to host the Model UNESCO Conference to build platforms for meaningful youth participation in public policy.
