On 19 May 2020, we are deeply saddened to hear the passing away of the famous educator Professor Tao Xiping, Honorary President of UNESCO Hong Kong Association (UHKA), Member of Chinese National Education Consultative Committee, Adviser to Chinese National Chief Inspector, President of Chinese National Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations (CNFUCA) and Honorary President of World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations (WFUCA).

Professor Tao was the engine that drove the establishment of UHKA. He highly affirmed the Hong Kong Education for Sustainable Development Association (formerly known as UHKA) to promote and practice the United Nations Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and conducted the transformation and initiated the establishment of UHKA, which has become an essential part of UNESCO.

UHKA is dedicated to supporting, facilitating and achieving UNESCO’s mission since its establishment. Under the guidance of Professor Tao, UHKA carried out various activities in education, science and culture based on ESD. In the past ten years, he actively participated in various events held in Hong Kong and wrote many congratulatory messages, letters and appreciations to express his best wishes. In addition, he actively promoted the exchanges and strengthened the connections among Hong Kong, the Mainland China and different countries and regions in the world.

His leadership was instrumental in aligning all the distinguished members and supporters of UHKA, leading us to work together to take the concepts of sustainable development to the practice of Sustainable Development Goals. His penetrating insight and acute foresight are exemplary to all of us. We will inherit and carry forward the educational wealth that Professor Tao left us with and always keep him in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace!
